Project History

The 290 Extension Project focuses on an approximately 15-mile section of US 290 located east of Austin, Texas, traversing the cities of Manor in Travis County and Elgin in Bastrop County.

The Mobility Authority currently operates the existing 290 Toll Road, a 6.2-mile toll road which includes three tolled lanes and three non-tolled lanes in each direction from the US 183 interchange to SH 130 and direct connectors at both US 183 and SH 130.

After opening to traffic in 2014, the upgraded US 290/290 Toll facility significantly improved mobility for both tolled and non-tolled movement.

The existing 290 Toll Road also features a ten-foot wide, six-mile shared use path for pedestrians and cyclists. This path has connections to the 183 Trail.

As population and congestion grew along US 290 east of the terminus of 290 Toll Road, the Mobility Authority, at the request of local officials, began exploring the feasibility of an eastern extension of the toll road. The 290 Extension Project’s environmental study and schematic design officially kicked off in April 2025. Crews have commenced conducting field work associated with initial surveys for this project and project-related outreach has begun.
